About DMAC

Drumchapel Money Advice Centre (DMAC) is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) Scottish Charity Number SC021548. DMAC is governed by a Management Committee of volunteer representatives of other local Projects. Our members have a wide range of skills and experience working within the community. DMAC is the main parent charity incorporating two constituent projects Drumchapel Children’s Rights Project and Drumchapel Advocacy Project.

Our Mission at DMAC

To promote social justice and address the problems of economic, financial and social exclusion facing people living in the Glasgow North-West area through the provision of comprehensive quality community money advice service and advocacy support.

Drumchapel Money Advice Centre (DMAC)

The purpose of DMAC is to relieve poverty by making available advice and representation in connection with Financial Inclusion issues – arrears, welfare benefits, housing and disability matters, geared to the specific needs of persons who are in a state of poverty. To also advance education and knowledge in these fields and those of disability and children’s rights and to promote citizen advocacy.

DMAC is a 30-year-old community led organization, restructured and relaunched in 2013, which currently operates 3 projects, Money Advice Service, the Children’s Rights Project and Advocacy Project.

Our aim is to meet the needs of people living in poverty whatever the circumstances, e.g. whether they are lone parents, disabled or refugees and migrants, whether they are in or out of work, whether they are young or old. Our objectives are to improve their quality of life and wellbeing.

Our money advice service provides a comprehensive welfare rights service available to anyone living in the North-West of Glasgow normally accessible through call-ins, referrals appointment and outreach clinics in community facilities. This includes representation at benefits tribunals. We also advise clients regarding issues especially in relation to rent arrears, Council Tax arrears and benefit overpayments.

Through our partnership with a Law Centre, we can arrange court representation in cases such as eviction and obtaining medical evidence for benefit appeals. Our aim is to aid people to continue to live in their homes and promote family stability.

In all cases we arrange Income Maximization for clients.

Drumchapel Advocacy Project

The Drumchapel Advocacy Project was originally launched in 1993 to provide a generic, quality, independent Advocacy service to the Drumchapel G15 area of Glasgow an area which is rated in the top 5% areas of deprivation in Scotland

Aims: The aims and objectives of the Drumchapel Advocacy Project is to provide a unique Advocacy service within the Drumchapel G15 area of Glasgow, which on occasion has expanded into the wider areas out with the Drumchapel area. By providing a free, independent service which is accessible to all individuals and groups regardless of issues.

Our service objective is to assist people by giving them a voice and by ensuring their views are heard. We target the vulnerable and hard to reach individuals by working towards a community where individuals’ needs are met, and people are empowered to have a greater influence over the services they need and use.

The Drumchapel Children’s Rights Project (CRP)

The Drumchapel Childrens rights project (CRP) offer a unique service to children and young people ages 5-18 living in the West of Glasgow. It is one of the few projects of its kind in Scotland and unique in Glasgow. The project stemmed from the experience of the Advocacy Project (the third constituent project within DMAC). In many instances Advocates were in fact representing young people via parents and it was recognized that this could throw up conflict of interest with young people’s views, needs etc. being overshadowed by those of their parents. A successful application for funding was submitted in 1998 to BBC Children in Need and in August of that year the Project ‘open for business’.
